Meaningful Ways to Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with Kids

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a great opportunity to teach your children about Dr. King and America’s history of injustice, the Civil Rights Movement, and the long, ongoing march towards equality. This year, make Martin Luther King, Jr. Day more meaningful for your children by providing them with some history as to why we celebrate. There are several family-friendly, inspiring, and really affordable (many are FREE!) ways to celebrate MLK Day in Central NJ and beyond. Here’s a listing of them, with links and information. Enjoy!

Each year, we celebrate MLK Day with service and learning activities in support of community food justice.
Join us this year to:
– Prepare bagged lunches
– Make seed packets by hand for local schools and gardens
– Videos of famous speeches and moments of the Civil Rights Movement
– Write letters to individuals detained in regional prisons and detention centers

Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative: “Breaking the Color Barrier” at New Jersey State Museum (Trenton, NJ)
January 15, 2018 at 3PM – 5PM
The New Jersey Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Commission is proud to host our annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative event. This year’s program will include guest speakers, music, and arts all of which will honor the life and legacy of Dr. King in law and justice. This is a FREE event and is open to the general public. So invite your friends, families, colleagues, neighbors, and whoever you believe will be interested in attending an event that reminds us that justice, equality, and peace are attainable. Dr. King said, “We must use time creatively, in the knowledge that the time is always ripe to do right.” So please take the time to join us at this year’s commemorative event!

Jersey Cares Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service – Volunteer Opportunities (Various Locations)
January 15, 2018 
For the 9th Annual Jersey Cares Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, 1,700 volunteers will participate in 20 service projects spanning two days. Volunteers will honor Dr. King’s legacy while displaying their own leadership skills as they brighten dull walls with fresh paint, spend time with seniors, paint murals, and organize donations. Volunteers throughout New Jersey will work to embody Dr. King’s vision and bring people of all ages and backgrounds together strengthening their communities.

Arts Council of Princeton – Martin Luther King Day: Free Community Event (Princeton, NJ)
January 15, 2018 at 9AM – 5PM
Celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a day of multidisciplinary performances, interactive workshops, and discussions as they relate to Dr. King’s life, teachings and civic engagement. We are planning a full-day of events. Attendees are invited to stay for the day or come and go. Activities and programs are appropriate for all ages.

La Convivencia (coexistence), West Windsor Arts Council, and The African-American Parent Support Group are partnering to have their first MLK Day of Service. Families are invited to make personal care kits and decorate bags to donate to Arm In Arm families (personal care items will be supplied). A great event for pre-schoolers to teens!

Newark Museum – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Community Celebration (Newark, NJ)

This special community day includes musical and spoken word performances, hands-on activities for all ages. We’ll also honor Dr. King’s legacy with a dramatic reading of his Letter from Birmingham Jail and will be showing the “I Have a Dream” speech.
